My birthday present for this year is a new ball-jointed doll in the form of an HZ RORO (created by *heise, check it out here: [link]). Mine is the Wangye model.
I ordered the doll blank with the intention of doing the faceup (makeup, painting of the features etc.) and body blushing myself. I came up with a Photoshopped faceup concept idea which you can see here in my Scraps: [link] Over the past weekend I worked on the doll and completed my first ever attempt at a faceup and body blushing. I took photos at every major step of the process and this is the result. I'm really happy with it (although there are some differences between the concept and the finished article... I decided not to keep the red flashes at the outer edges of his eyes, for example). I guess you could consider this a pictures-only BJD faceup tutorial. I can't be bothered to write accompanying text for all the process stages right now, there are plenty of tutorials available online which cover that anyway. But something I will say is that Mr. Super Clear is a godsend! I've used MSC Flat UV Cut to fix and seal the work on my doll. It really is worth investing in MSC if you want to do your own faceups/body blushing; now I've used it I wouldn't take a chance on anything else since BJDs are too precious to risk ruining with a cheaper alternative.
Collectively these sorts of dolls are usually called BJDs (ball-jointed dolls - usually of Asian origin)... do a search for them on eBay or Google and you should find lots. "Dollfie" is another term you may wish to search under. For the eyes, just search for BJD eyes. This can be a pretty expensive hobby to get into, so be warned! I'm quite thrifty though and will look to save money wherever I can, so none of the BJDs I own are from the very expensive BJD brands. I've managed to find dolls with the kind of looks I like but at fairly reasonable prices.
Ah, right! I started out collecting Pullip dolls myself before I moved on to the BJDs. As far as I'm aware though you can't get blank Pullip dolls, so for customisation purposes BJDs are where it's at.
They are now, yeah... when I first got interested it was probably about 7 years ago and they were generally a lot cheaper. Many Pullips are around double the price now, but the production quality has been upgraded and they collaborate with big names like h.NAOTO, Hello Kitty etc. and have lots of anime tie-ins. To begin with, Pullips were like the pretender to Blythe's throne but I never found Blythe dolls as attractive.
Oooh. Wow, that sucks. But I do like the anime features to them. That's actually why I want to own a few but I don't even have a job yet lol. But once I get one, I may look some up. I'm too lazy to make my own and most likely mess up xD so I'd prefer to buy one that's already made haha.
what are those blank dolls called? and where can i find them...and the eyes? lol
But thanks! x3
