Description

This is a concept that came to me while I was struggling to sleep one night, called "Amber". I worked it up into this piece soon after, but the drawing itself was straight into ballpoint pen and as such it's quite loose and raw. I think this adds to its charm though and perhaps helps the 'voice' of the idea come through more clearly than if it was realised in a technically tidier sense.

I see the upper foetal figure as being a visual metaphor for preserving a moment of beauty indefinitely in a permanent form while the lower figure is a sentient mannequin - a variant of the figure in A Mannequin's Soliloquy [link] - an every-person with the ravages of real life experience and dark thoughts spilling out for all to see. I guess it's supposed to pose the question as to which is better/where true beauty lies - either in opting for a safe and sheltered life with no risks (but no real freedom) or following your own path; discovering the wider world and your true self, warts and all.

Lovely glowing colouring of this imaginative ball-point pen sketch. Great expression and interpretation. XXX
